The old testament prophet Nahum was around about 100 years after Jonah. Guess where he went to preach?… If you guessed Nineveh you would be correct. The Ninevites went back to their evil ways in just a few generations. This is why it is so crucial (very important) that we read the Bible and seek the Lord to see if we are being faithful to Him. Some where in the history of Nineveh the people decided to stop following after the commands of the Lord and the direction that was given to them by Jonah. NAHUM 1:7 says, “The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.”

In Jonah?s day the people from the king all the way down to the lowest servant repented. They looked to the Lord as their stronghold in the day of trouble and He relented from destroying them. Now just a few generations later, probably those people great-grandchildren are back sinning again and they don?t seem to pay any heed to what Nahum is telling them. What a blessing it is that God is slow to anger, but He will eventually judge sinners. Today, we look back to the time when Jesus came, died, and rose again for our sins. God has made a way for us to not have to be judged.

Another minor prophet, Habakkuk said in Habakkuk 2:4 “Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.” Those who are proud are not upright. I think of the chimps and orangutans who walk most of the time on their hands; they are not upright. God has created us in His image and we are supposed to walk upright, looking straight at Him. If we aren?t upright then we?re looking towards the ground. When we are proud, we are puffed up, thinking of ourselves as better than we are. Trusting more in our own abilities and selfishness than in others or even in God.
But the just shall live by faith. Who are the just? Those who are justified, pure, clean? People who have surrendered their hearts and lives to Jesus, they are justified in the Lord. This means it is like they have never sinned. God cleans their whiteboard of all the sin and pride that separates them from God and makes it brand new. There are no marks, or smears or problems. God cleanses and forgives. He promised that to Ninevah, He promised it to many other nations and He has made it available to us through faith in Jesus. I hope that you will place your faith and trust in Jesus today, if you haven?t already done so.
